5 WAYS TO SAVE

It's easy to get caught up in healthcare and everything that comes with it - bills, claims, finding a provider. And, let's face it, healthcare can be expensive. That's why it's important to be a smart consumer. Here are 5 tips on how you can save money.

BE A SMART CONSUMER

Bills for lab work or imaging services vary by location and can be costly, so researching prices before you make your appointment can save you money.

  1. If your doctor issues lab work or an imaging service, ask for the work order. Standalone facilities often charge less than hospitals.
  2. Check out your health plan’s website or call the customer service number on the back of your medical ID card to find standalone facilities in your health plan’s network to save money.
  3. Use online cost comparison tools provided through your health plan to research costs ahead of time.
  4. Telemedicine is a great way for you to save money and avoid the wait at a doctor’s office. The average cost of telemedicine can sometimes save you hundreds of dollars. So next time you feel too busy to get to the doctor’s office, try telemedicine instead.

AVOID THE EMERGENCY ROOM

Emergency rooms cost you and your health plan more money than an urgent care or walk-in clinic. These facilities provide the same services at a lower cost and typically take less time; however, if it’s a true emergency, don’t hesitate to go to the ER or call 911.

  1. Find an in-network urgent care provider or walk-in clinic in your health plan's network.
  2. Save emergencies for the emergency room. If you have an injury or illness that can wait, go to an urgent care provider, walk-in clinic, or connect with a certified doctor through Telemedicine instead.
  3. Not sure where to go? Try calling a medical helpline. Several health plans offer a 24/7 helpline that allows you to speak with a registered nurse. Some hospital systems offer their own helpline as well.

SHOP AROUND

You probably like to research costs before making big purchases like a car or TV, so why should health care be any different? The cost of healthcare services can vary from one provider to the next, so it’s important to shop around for the best value.

GoodRx.com - Search and compare the costs of generic and brand name prescription drugs at retail pharmacies near you. They also provide coupons for certain drugs and tips for cutting your prescription costs. *Anthem now credits out-of-pocket expenses to the deductible and annual out-of-pocket amounts by submitting a manual claim (check with your carrier for availability and details).

Health carrier comparison tool - Nearly all major carriers have a Cost Comparison Calculator feature that allows members to enter the primary surgery or treatment, lab or radiology service, and your zip code, to find multiple providers that offer the same service, and the cost at each facility. One rule of thumb is, that tests at hospitals are nearly always more costly than in a standalone facility.

CUT Rx COSTS

Prescription drug prices vary by pharmacy. Do some research up front—compare drug prices using a resource like GoodRx.com or talk to your doctor about lower cost options.

  1. Ask your doctor about switching to a generic prescription if you are currently taking a brand name drug. Many retail pharmacies offer generic drugs at a discount—some as low as $4.
  2. Sign up for mail order prescriptions. This is a great option if you are taking medication for a chronic condition.
  3. Ask your doctor if pill splitting is an option for you. Pill splitting means you get two doses for the price of one. Not all prescriptions are safe for pill splitting, so make sure you have a conversation with your doctor first.

MAINTAIN YOUR HEALTH

Keep up with recommended care. Most health plans allow you and your covered family members to receive certain preventive care services, such as an annual physical, at no cost when you use an in-network provider.

Check with your carrier’s plan to find out which free preventive care services are available to you or by visiting HealthCare.gov/what-are-my-preventive-care-benefits.

  1. Get an annual physical and recommended immunizations for your age and gender.
  2. If you’re visiting your doctor for an annual checkup, try to limit conversations with your doctor to only preventive topics. If you talk about pre-existing conditions or exploratory tests, your doctor can make a diagnosis and you may be charged for a non-preventive doctor visit.
  3. Schedule your bi-annual dental exam and annual eye exam.
